"The Alienist" (O Alienista) foi uma estreia esperada tanto para quem gosta de séries policiais quanto para quem ama histórias de época. A série ambientada na Nova York do final do século XIX, mais precisamente em 1896, foi baseada no romance de Caleb Carr e acompanha o trio formado por John Moore (Luke Evans), ilustrador do New York Times, Dr. Laszlo Kreizler (Daniel Bruhl), alienista (espécie de psiquiatra da época), e Sara Howard (Dakota Fanning), secretária e primeira mulher a trabalhar para a polícia, durante a investigação de misteriosos casos de assassinato de crianças envolvidas em prostituição.
Mesmo sem trazer uma proposta exatamente nova e tendo alguns problemas de roteiro, "The Alienist" acerta ao trazer para a série questões muito atuais como a sexualidade, os transtornos psicológicos, a corrupção e o feminismo. Outros pontos fortes da produção da TNT são o elenco bastante carismático e toda a produção artística da série, incluindo fotografia, cenários e figurino.
As roupas de cada personagem é o que de fato completa o cenário vitoriano do período, criando identidade para cada um deles. O figurinista Michael Kaplan acostumado a grandes filmes como "Star Wars" e "Blade Runner" construiu o guarda-roupa da série através de muita pesquisa histórica e do próprio perfil psicológico dos personagens.
A capacidade de Kaplan de injetar personalidade em cada peça de roupa nos permite entender os motivos, a história e os relacionamentos do personagem, mesmo se estivermos assistindo ao programa no mudo.
Em vez de infundir o Alienista com muita cor, Kaplan usa a atmosfera sombria a seu favor. Os trajes quase vazios de cores remetem as fotos em preto e branco compondo com o cenário do passado.
O mais surpreendente é que este é o primeiro figurino de época de Kaplan, e podemos dizer que ele fez um trabalho incrível. Além das nuances relacionadas a personalidade, o figurinista trabalha muito bem as diferenças sociais e as tendências de moda do período.
A feminista Sara Howard é uma das personagens mais bem construídas da série, sempre na moda com suas amplas mangas presunto, ela possui um figurino com diversas referências ao vestuário masculino como gravatas e peças de alfaiataria, afim de impor sua presença no meio masculino em que vive. Sara é um exemplo de personagem que possui um figurino que fala por ela, demonstrando sua personalidade forte e o quanto está frente de seu tempo. Traços femininos ficam para a cintura marcada e para a beleza delicada de Dakota, que sofreu com os espartilhos durante as filmagens.
Os personagens masculinos principais John Moore e Dr. Laszlo Kreizler possuem um visual totalmente diferente, enquanto o primeiro se comporta como um Dândi, extremamente vaidoso e ousado em suas escolhas, o segundo é bastante contido e clássico escolhendo peças que o fazem parecer mais velho.
Em meio a um mar de produções com figurinos pouco embasados é bonito ver uma série ter tamanho cuidado na construção de seu personagens, ainda mais se tratando de uma história com alto teor psicológico.

"The Alienist": Costume Design
"The Alienist" was an anticipated debut for both those who love crime series and those who love period stories. The series set in New York in the late 19th century, more precisely in 1896, was based on the novel by Caleb Carr and accompanies the trio formed by John Moore (Luke Evans), illustrator of the New York Times, Dr. Laszlo Kreizler (Daniel Bruhl ) and Sara Howard (Dakota Fanning), secretary and first woman to work for the police, during the investigation of mysterious cases of murder of children involved in prostitution.
Even without bringing an exactly new proposal and having some script problems, "The Alienist" hits on bringing to the series very current issues such as sexuality, psychological disorders, corruption and feminism. Other strengths of TNT's production are the very charismatic cast and the entire artistic production of the series, including photography, scenery and costumes.
The clothes of each character is what actually completes the Victorian scenario of the period, creating identity for each one of them. Costume designer Michael Kaplan accustomed to big films like "Star Wars" and "Blade Runner" built the wardrobe of the series through historical research and the psychological profile of the characters themselves.
Kaplan's ability to inject personality into each piece of clothing allows us to understand the character's motives, history, and relationships, even if we are watching the show on mute.
Instead of infusing lots of colors in "The Alienist", Kaplan uses the gloomy atmosphere in his favor. The costumes almost empty of colors refer to the black and white photos composing with the scenery of the past.
The most surprising thing is that this is Kaplan's first period costume, and we can say that he did an incredible job. In addition to the nuances related to personality, the costume designer works very well the social differences and fashion trends of the period.
Feminist Sara Howard is one of the best-built characters in the series, always fashionable with her big sleeves, she has a wardrobe with several references to men's clothing such as ties and tailoring, in order to impose her presence in the male milieu where she lives. Sara is an example of a character who has a wardrobe that speaks for her, demonstrating her strong personality and how much she is ahead of her time. Feminine traits stand for the marked waist and for the delicate beauty of Dakota, who suffered with the corsets during the filming.
The main male characters John Moore and Dr. Laszlo Kreizler have a totally different look, while the former behaves like a Dandy, extremely vain and daring in his choices, the second is rather restrained and classic choosing pieces that make him look older.
Amid a sea of productions with little underpinned costumes is beautiful to see a series taking care of the construction of its characters, even more if it is a story with a high psychological content.
